As Christmas approaches we love to get into our sensory play with some festive activities. Like this awesome Peppermint scented sensory Christmas Slime. It turned out fantastic and I think it is one of the best feeling slimes I have made yet. It smells beautiful, it shines and sparkles, it feels smooth yet bumpy, it jingles and we put it in the fridge for storage so it can even feel cold and frosty. It smells so good your mouth might start watering.
It truly was a fun all round sensory Christmas slime and it was entertaining to play with. We went ahead and made another batch of slime so we could jar it up as Christmas gifts. Let me show you how we made this easy (not-so-messy) Sensory Christmas Slime…
Watch the video that I will include at the end of this article, for a quick visual on the recipe and mixing process.
How to make Sensory Christmas Slime.
Ingredients
- Elmer’s Glitter Glue.
- 1 cup of water.
- Glitter in Christmas colours.
- Sequins.
- 2 caps of Glycerine.
- 2 caps of Peppermint essence.
- 1 cup of warm/hot water.
- 3/4 tsp Borax.
- Jingle Bells.
Steps to make your Festive Sensory Slime.
- Get two bowls. In the first bowl mix together a bottle of Elmer’s Glitter Glue and 1 cup of water. Add Glitter and sequins. Add Glycerine and Peppermint Essence.
2. In the second bowl, mix together the hot water with the borax until it dissolves.
3. Gradually, slowly, add the second mix into the first bowl. Dash by Dash as you mix. This is a process… As the boron solution finds the PVA content in the glue it will cause it to thicken. So as you continue to mix it continues to thicken.
Tip: The worse thing you can do it pour the whole lot in. Try doing a dash and then working it for at least a minute or two before adding another dash of borax mixture. If it is still too runny continue to gradually add in more borax/water and work it in.
Once it is a nice consistency add in your jingle bells, put it in a container and store it in the fridge for an hour. Check out the video below to see our slime in action.
The benefits of playing with Sensory Slime.
Sensory experiences are great for allowing children to follow a theme and through play, explore using their senses (sight, smell, touch, sound and taste). This theme and the Christmas sensory slime provides a fun festive activity that will help get children excited for the Christmas season while playing using their senses.
Children are engaged while they are using all their senses. After all, they learn through their senses and whilst all, or many of their sense are being used they are coordinating different aspects of cognitive development. It might just look like sparkly goo to adults, but this Sensory Christmas goo activates a child’s sensory pathways in more ways than one.
Different textures, smells, sights and so on, help children organize their world. It is relaxing, calming, even mesmerizing. While playing during sensory play children are often very focussed and comforted. They also benefit from the fine motor skills and if they are not playing solo, they benefit from the exchange in language. Sensory play is a fantastic open-ended source to help develop creativity and imagination.
This Sensory Christmas Slime engages children through the peppermint essence smell, through the rubbery smooth feel (the glitter glue is the perfect pva to use), through the cold shivery feel (store it in the fridge), through the sound of the jingle bells and the slime being squished in their fingers and through the bumpy feel (the jingles and the sequins. It is just so intriguing and calming.
Jar it up as a DIY Christmas Gift.
This activity turned out so well that we made another batch. We put some in a jar as a cute little Christmas gift addition. All you need to do is to get an air tight jar (like these ones) and decorate it with some ribbon and some tinsel around the lid. It will make a perfect stocking stuffer gift, or even a cheap DIY gift for class mates and friends.
I hope you give this recipe a go. It really turned out fabulous and you wont be disappointed. It is time to get into the Christmas spirit and if you aren’t feeling it yet, this will kick start the holiday cheer. The kids will love it. You will love it, and I promise if you use the Elmer’s glitter glue that I linked to above, it will not be sticky and it will not be anywhere as messy as you are imagining.
