Want a personalised signed copy of my children’s book? to celebrate The Quirky Smelling Lunchbox Release this offer is open to Australian readers. I am very excited to announce the release of my first picture book for children, it is called The Quirky Smelling Lunchbox. YAY! The concept of the children’s book
The Quirky Smelling Lunchbox is for children ages 3-8 years old. It can be read individually, in families, or in early childhood settings. It would be beneficial in allied health settings.

Have you ever complained about your child being fussy? Have you ever discussed awesome recipes with other parents only to say ‘oh my child wont eat that’. Well, that was me and my best friend… The inspiration behind the story. We both like to cook, we both have cool recipes and get create in the kitchen. Then we both end up going down the path of comparing what our kids will and wont eat in a hope to broaden their acceptance of new, different food combinations.
Especially in the lunchbox. Find the free competition on social media here!
The story introduces children to food diversity. There are themes of openness, friendship and food culture. It is a children’s book with a hint of humour, aimed at children with sensory processing issues, fussy eaters, or just those with inflexible views on trying new food (no matter how Quirky it smells). Obviously prawns and some of the contents wont end up in a school lunchbox unless it is a mini-fridge, but it is a fun take on exploring unique, quirky foods.
Illustrated by Andrew McIntosh
The book has been amazingly illustrated by the very talented and creative Andrew McIntosh. His illustrations appeal to the modern reader. Andrew really elaborates the “smells” that we can’t typically see. Hr brings the smells to life with great imagination and a magically colour theme.
The story can also be used to address friendship and non-judgment. The young girl in the story is one of the only people open to the quirky weird lunches. The smell doesn’t phase her and she is interested rather than deterred. She is an example of a non-judgemental personality towards his lunchbox and has an accepting, open, flexible way of approaching new scents and aromas.
Food diversity and food culture have been beautifully illustrated in the school playground setting, with lots of unique colourful displays of the quirky recipes. The character’s facial expressions lend themselves well to discussions about their possibly feelings, thoughts and behaviours.

Aims of the picture book
Imagine if children were open to try any new recipe that was given to them. Imagine if they gave every new quirky lunch a try! No matter the cultural aspect or how it smelt or looked, or the opinions of others. That’s possibly a bit too optimistic but that was my hope when I created this story…
If only children were more open to try things and not be impacted by misleading smells, sights or comments. The worst that could happen? Maybe it would be that they learn they really don’t like the taste of something. But at least they tried. They may also learn that things that smell unique, actually aren’t so bad, some even really really tasty and healthy.
It really just is a fun book to introduce this aspect of food diversity and can open discussions in early childcare settings on such topics as ‘non-judgement, ‘openness’ and ‘learning through experience rather than avoidance’. Here is a little bit more about it…
