Posted on January 16, 2018 Leave a Comment

Starting school is full of mixed emotions, for children and their parents.  It is a big transition and you want to help prepare your child for school, however you might feel more nervous than your child.  It is possible that they too are feeling really unsure about starting school – however they mightn’t know how to outwardly ask questions about what they should expect.

Starting school is a big deal.

Starting school is a huge step and it is a momentous time full of new experiences.  For the transition to occur in a positive way you can help prepare your child for school using books.

Understandable parents want to help prepare their child for school in a relaxed, no pressure and age appropriate way.  By using books you can really help prepare a child for school and develop their awareness of the new experiences they might encounter.

An easy was to help prepare your child for school.

Children’s picture books are great for opening discussions about important events, they use simple and repetitive narratives to teach children and address new experiences.  They also have beautiful stories and pictures that children can relate to.

One way you can help prepare your child for school is by reading relevant books and discussing the experience in the story.  When Dimples was due to start school we read lots of “starting school” books, to help give him an idea of what to expect. It definitely helped him to start looking forward to starting school and it helped aide a smooth transition.

11 Books to help prepare your child for school.

Here are a list of books to help prepare your child for school.  We personally have most of these books. “ Tom and Small ” is still one of our favourites. ” Jessica’s box ” and “I’m here ” are nice additions that add stories of being yourself and finding true friendship.   “Jumping into Kindergarten” is a new story, it looks beautiful.  We currently have this on its way as a gift for Miss T who will be starting school in 2019.

Happy reading!
