It’s the end of the year and my eight year old is becoming a reluctant writer. This happens at the end of the year when school is just getting too much. He loves drawing, he loves reading, he loves using his imagination and he loves Christmas, but if I ask him to write about it. No way! I really wanted to encourage Dimples to write more and enjoy it, so I made this Christmas advent journal for kids.
I hope this can help other reluctant writers get in the Christmas spirit and do some creative writing. It is full of Christmas themed writing prompt and is also broken up with some easy creative space to draw.
The “12 days of Christmas… My way!” Christmas advent journal has fun prompts to inspire kids to use their Christmassy imagination and count down to Christmas. What better way to encourage creative writing than to combine all the things reluctant writers love, with a tiny little bit of writing.

All you need to do it click here and print the 12 Christmas themed writing prompts and bind them in a journal. We simply put one staple and a clip on the top to hold the pages together. Then, start your count down to Christmas.
How to use the Christmas advent journal
The Christmas advent journal has twelve themed prompts that encourage your child to use their imagination, in some short expressive writing. This is broken up with some fun drawing prompts. The best time for children to focus on something they are not overly impressed about is in the morning.
This doesn’t always work, so we plan to sit down after dinner and a bath in the evening, when it is quite and we are getting ready for bed. I plan to let Dimples use my special pencil set and my glitter pens so it is more exciting (and Christmassy).
First we will read the days writing prompt, I’ll ask his ideas and sit with him while doing a bit of my own reading or writing. That way I am there to encourage and praise his effort and help with any ideas or wording he gets stuck on.
The creative writing prompts and drawings in the Christmas advent journal vary. Each encourages the child to write, just a little each day. Each page has an emphasis on using their imagination and creative thinking. The journal is not only a countdown to Christmas, it is also a cute keepsake.
Keep it and compare their writing skills next year, when you can print it out and do it again 🙂
Hope you enjoy and share this. Have a fun filled Christmas Holiday
